Focus On: Bourdelle Museum | Free Art Love by Paris Photographer IheartParis
It’s not a big secret - Paris is one expensive city. As a matter of fact, it takes this year’s most expensive city spot along Singapore and Hong Kong. Yet, every now and then, this amazing city decides to open its arms and share some of its amazing culture for free. While most museums offer free entry on the first Sunday of the month, some museums are free all year around and Musée Bourdelle is one of them.
Antoine Bourdelle was a sculptor, painter and teacher. He was a student of Auguste Rodin and among his own students were Henri Matisse and Giacometti. Dropping these names can give you an idea of the type of artist Bourdelle was and also what to expect. I could also tell you he is the sculptor for the statues at Palais de Tokyo - one of my favorite spots in Paris to shoot at.
The one thing to bear in mind, though, is that this museum also has temporal collections that are paid, but the museum itself and its permanent collections are free access.
From everything there, what really struck me was his studio. As a photographer, everything is about the light and his North Facing studio gets all the morning light…just like in our apartment. The soft light from the window is just sublime in contrast to the dark tones inside his studio. As a photographer, the soft light is just gorgeous for carving the depth of the statues harder with the shadows.
It is really worth the visit if you venture down to Montparnasse area in Paris. Make sure to get all the information on the museum’s website here.
